Lead-Up Races

There are a number of earlier mares-only races held during the autumn in Melbourne that serve as an ideal lead-up to the Matron Stakes including the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Blue Diamond Stakes Day and the Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley.

History

The Matron Stakes is one of the country’s younger races and was first conducted in 1994.

Excited Angel won the inaugural race and since then a number of strong mares have won the Matron Stakes including Dance The Night (2000), Umber (2006) and Fifth Avenue (2009).

Originating as a Listed event the Matron Stakes reached its current Group 3 status in 2006.

For the first seven years, the Matron Stakes was run over numerous distances until in 2000 the distance became 1600m, which it still remains today.
