2010 Matron Stakes Final Field

March 11th, 2010

Melbourne’s premier racing venue, Flemington racecourse, is gearing up to host an elite day of racing this Saturday, March 13, after a rained soaked and interrupted meeting last weekend.

The highly anticipated Blamey Stakes Day will feature a bumper ten race card as the two Group 1 races postponed from last week, the $1million Australian Cup and the $750, 000 Australian Guineas, have been re-scheduled to run this Saturday.

Another fantastic race set to draw a crowd is the $150, 000 Group 3 Volunteers Matron Stakes (1600m) where ten quality fillies and mares will fight it out for the $90, 000 first prize for their connections.

The Robert Smerdon-trained Marveen is a mare to watch, coming off a gallant third place run in the Group 3 Schweppervesence Trophy (1400m) at Flemington. The four-year-old daughter of Orientate will jump from barrier five on Saturday with in-form hoop Glen Boss aboard.

One of Marveen’s biggest threats is the Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained Response, out wide in barrier seven. The lightly-raced three-year-old Charge Forward filly has had just three career starts to date and has impressed in all.

She won on debut at the start of February this year and then placed second in her following two races, over 1200m and then 1400m. She is coming off a sensational last-start second to Faint Perfume in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes last weekend here and will be hard to catch if she can get to the front early.

Meanwhile, last start winner Chouxmaani has secured the prized inside draw for the Matron Stakes. The Simon Morrish-trained Minardi mare will be ridden by Luke Nolen.

The 2010 Matron Stakes will run as race seven at 3:50pm (VIC time) while the scheduled feature, the $300, 000 Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) runs earlier as race four and finally the big attractions, the Australian Crown Guineas and Australian Cup, are programmed as races eight and nine respectively.
