Response Wins 2010 Matron Stakes

March 15th, 2010

Impressive young filly Response claimed her second career win on Saturday at Flemington when she defeated a classy field of rivals in the $150, 000 Group 3 Volunteers Matron Stakes (1600m).

Response started the 2010 Matron Stakes as the $2.80 equal favourite and lived up to her potential

Prepared by local training duo Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra, Response started the 2010 Matron Stakes as the $2.80 equal favourite and lived up to her potential overcoming a wide draw to defeat Delta Gee ($14) by 1 ¾ lengths with Midnight Wine ($17) in third.

The Robert Smerdon-trained Marveen was sharing equal favouritism with Response, but the mare was scratched at the barriers.

Response, although only lightly-raced, is being hailed as the next up-and-coming star as she showed a lot of potential with her win on Saturday. It was her first start up against the mares and also her first run at a mile, with neither fazing her.

The victory was jockey Craig Williams’ fourth Matron Stakes success following his wins aboard Jadeva Belle (1996), Umber (2006) and Translate (2008).

The winning Charge Forward filly has now secured two of her four career starts, placing second in the other two, for over $190, 000 in earnings.

The day boasted a cracker race programme that included the two Group 1 features cancelled from last weekend’s Flemington washout. The Australian Cup saw grand eight-year-old Zipping secure Group 1 glory for the first time, and the Australian Guineas was won by Rock Classic to give premier trainer Bart Cummings his 258th Group 1 victory.

Also run at the meeting was the original highlight event, the Group 2 Blamey Stakes where Lord Tavistock secured victory.
